Cleaning Up and Cleaning Out

After spending the last few weekends cleaning up some of the main living areas, the latest project was to finish the new upstairs linen closet, and get rid of all of the stuff I decided not to keep. The old “linen closet” was really a set of narrow cupboards at the end of the upstairs hallway, which were completely full and yet held NONE of the towels and sheets that I actually use. So I grabbed a new giant garbage bag, and headed for the cupboards to see what was there. Turns out, a lot of old, unused stuff. One full garbage bag of yard sale items later, the cupboards were mostly empty, and I was able to get my towels and some of my sheets in, with space to spare. Unfortunately, the cupboard just wasn’t big enough to properly hold king-sized sheet sets. So I turned  to the dark, messy, mis-used closet in the middle of the hallway. Turns out, a lot of that was yard sale stuff too, along with a few keepsake items that weren’t stored properly. Once that closet was emptied, it was time for new shelves, which I just happened to have left over from putting the library together a few years ago. Result: a beautifully organized linen closet that holds all the sheets, comforter covers, keepsake quilts, spare hall rug, both vacuum cleaners, and the mop.  Oh, and it smells good, too:

In addition to the two bags of stuff from the hall cupboards and closets, I had many other boxes, tubs, and bags from cleaning out the basement and the kitchen and the bathroom. Fortunately, Mom is having a yard sale in a few weeks, so when she came to visit for the weekend it was time to get the stuff organized and loaded up in her truck to take to the sale. Turns out, I got rid of a lot more stuff than I thought, and I haven’t missed ANY of it:

Buh-Bye!

I am really, really impressed. I should know. I hauled all this stuff to my house for the September Yard Sale. Good job, Meg.
