This weekend’s project: a light-box

I got bored the other night, and ran across my list of photography projects I’d wanted to complete over the winter. None of which actually got done, but the one that caught my interest was building a light-box to take fancy photos of stuff. So I surfed around the internet a bit, and found some nice easy instructions (my favorite kind) for building one out of the following 3 objects:

    1 cardboard box
1 roll of white easel paper
1 set of 500w Halogen work lights

I went to work the next day to scout for a suitable box, knowing that we get computers, monitors, and random deliveries in boxes the approximate size I wanted. I got lucky, and we had just unpacked a laptop from Dell that came in a nice big box, and it was already white inside. Less work for me!

Next I hit up Amazon in search of lights and easel paper. A quick search for 500w halogen lights produced the exact light listed in the instructions I found. A slightly longer search produced a roll of white easel paper, the kind used for kids to draw all over. I added 2 of the lights and 1 roll of paper to my shopping cart, and hit the Checkout button. $42 later, my supplies are on the way.

In the meantime, I’ve been playing with the light-box a bit using just the external flash on my camera, and getting acceptable results:

Ghetto Lightbox Test

Once the easel paper is here it will be easy to cover those seams, and the 500w lights will mean better focusing and detail on whatever object strikes my fancy for shooting.
