My new Amazon Kindle

My new Kindle e-book reader from Amazon arrived today. A day early, even! Once I received the shipping notice, I spent some time ordering any free books that looked interesting, and prioritizing my list of favorite and yet-to-be-read books that I wanted on the Kindle. Amazingly, I managed to stay under the budget I set. So far. :)

The Kindle arrived in it’s own little shipping box, and inside that was a special, fancy black box with a black sleeve. The box and sleeve have embossed letters, stating “amazonkindle” as well as a pattern of apparently random letters. Slide the sleeve off the inner box, and there is a removable lid that covers the Kindle. The Kindle sits in a removable tray, below which is a short paper “quick start” guide, and the USB cable with power adapter. My impression: Amazon hired some rejected Apple designers, who had a great design idea that they ALMOST got right.

As for the Kindle itself:

  • Fiirst impression-not quite worth all the hype.
  • Overall impression-a really nice gadget, easy to use, and I love carrying 30 books in a 10oz device. The e-ink screen is truly amazing, and so much easier to read than a printed book, at least for me. It’s not backlit, though, so I’m still searching for a good portable booklight.

The Kindle has a name now, thanks to the helpful voices in my head: chicklit (as it is currently loaded with romance novels>girl books>Chick Lit.)

Now, can anyone explain to me why I have 3 paperback books arriving via UPS tomorrow, when I just got this fancy new e-book reader? And yes, all 3 of those paperbacks are available in Kindle version. . . . .

The new Kindle, on the new desk:
