Another fun Friday night at the computer
So my original plan for tonight was to spend it on the couch, admiring my new TV that was supposed to arrive today. Too bad the delivery service didn’t get that memo, and won’t be delivering the TV until early Sunday morning.
Instead, I have been playing around with my recorded TV shows from my Media Center PC, and working on a good way to move them to my Windows Home Server but still be able to see them from the Media Center PC. The problem is that Media Center uses the Anonymous Logon account to access the folders or drives where it looks for recorded TV shows. By default, for security reasons, Windows Home Server does not allow the Anonymous Logon account access to any of the shared folders. This can be temporarily fixed by manually adding the account to the folder where the recorded TV is stored on the server, and giving the account read permissions to the folder. But every time you reboot the server, or when it does its security checks, the permissions are removed and you have to go add them again. Not my idea of a good solution.
So, after some digging around on the internet, I have created a weekly scheduled task on the server, that runs a batch script which will modify the security permissions on my recorded TV folder and add the Anonymous Logon account.
Then I tracked down the settings to edit on the Media Center PC so that it will look for recordings on a network drive, which it REALLY doesn’t want to do.
Now I can set up Recorded TV Manager to automatically copy new recordings over to the Windows Home Server from the Media Center PC, and not have to worry about recordings getting deleted due to lack of space on the Media Center PC.
