Books

I love books. I’ve been reading since grade school, pretty much anything I could get my hands on that sounded entertaining. Books are a great escape from the daily stresses of life, and a great way to learn about other people and cultures and experiences without ever leaving the comfort of your home.

There was a time I would rather read than do anything else, to the detriment of my grades throughout my school years. As I said, I will read anything that sounds entertaining, but I will very rarely read anything scary or depressing. Or anything deep and thought-provoking, for that matter. Of course, “entertaining” is completely subjective, and I’m perfectly happy to include classic authors like Shakespeare and Mark Twain and Alexandre Dumas in my list of favorites, alongside more recent fare from the likes of Nora Roberts and John Grisham.

For the last few years, I haven’t spent nearly as much time reading as I used to. Too many other hobbies have encroached on my time, although I continue to watch for anything new that sounds interesting, either by familiar authors or new ones. And I’m working on cataloging my book collection, which has an entire room to itself now.

But tonight, I was browsing through the new iPhone App Store on iTunes. And I noticed an App called Stanza, by a company name LexCycle. I recognized the name from some App reviews as being a good product, and it was free, so I grabbed it. And I’ve spent the last hour collecting free electronic books from Project Gutenberg and FeedBooks. I’m up to 48 books on the iPhone, and by having them so portable and always with me, I hope that I will be able to start reading more often again.

I have to admit, I never thought I’d be reading “Pride and Prejudice” on something as high-tech as an iPhone!

Oh, yeah. I remember taking your books away from you so you’d concentrate on studies. Something we thought we’d NEVER do to one of our children, being educators. Glad you’ve found a way to read a lot again.
