The Spiderwick Chronicles - mini movie review

I’ve never read the Spiderwick books, and had barely seen any previews for The Spiderwick Chronicles movie. All I knew was that it was billed as an entertaining, family-friendly movie about some kids protecting their family and a powerful book from magical creatures. And that it was supposed to look REALLY good on Blu-Ray. Because I’m impatient, I ended up buying it from the iTunes store to watch on my AppleTV, an it did indeed look very good.

The movie itself is very good, a nice cross between lighthearted humor and the seriousness of addressing some of the issues that arise from divorce. Freddie Highmore (Charlie in “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory”) stars as the twin boys, and does a good job of portraying two very different children. There are some scary looking magic creatures, and some tense moments with goblins and such that mean this movie would probably not be appropriate for very young children. There are also some really good, laugh-out-loud funny moments, and a few plot twists that you can see coming from 20 minutes into the movie. Still, even though the movie has a fairly predictable ending, it’s worth the time to get there.
